- Laurie Mack
Laurie Mack serves as a Council Member for the Town of Granite Quarry, bringing a lifelong connection to the community, a background in education, and a deep commitment to public service.
Mack’s grandfather moved to the area from South Carolina in the 1940s to work at the quarry, establishing the family’s deep roots in the community. She credits his steady hands and heart with helping shape the family’s connection to the town. At 13, Mack relocated from New York City with her parents to Granite Quarry, where she experienced the close-knit environment that defines the town. Years later, she returned to care for her parents in the years leading up to the pandemic, reconnecting with the sense of belonging and history that led her to make Granite Quarry her permanent home.
She values the strong sense of community that exists in Granite Quarry, where lifelong friendships, family connections, and new relationships come together in everyday life. Mack appreciates the town’s traditional events such as Granite Fest, Arts in the Park, and Christmas at the Lake that reflect the town’s civic pride, rich history, and welcoming spirit. She also values the local amenities like Granite Lake Park, Civic Park, and the town’s walking trails.
Professionally, Mack is a retired elementary school teacher who continues to serve local students as a substitute teacher for the Rowan-Salisbury School System. Her teaching career spanned multiple regions and continents, including the East Coast, West Coast, and South America, where she developed strong communication skills, patience, and a collaborative approach to problem solving. These experiences now guide her work on the Town Council by helping her lead as a thoughtful listener, a practical decision maker, and someone committed to building consensus while keeping residents’ needs at the center.
Mack is actively involved in civic and community organizations. She serves with the Democratic National Committee as a Delegate to the NC State Executive Committee, is a member of the Rowan County Democratic Party Executive Leadership Committee, and serves as Vice President of the African American Caucus of Rowan County. In addition, she volunteers with school programs, supports faith-based food drives, and participates in local clean-up efforts and community events. Mack also serves on the Centralina Board of Delegates, is a member of the Black Elected Municipal Officials, and participates in the Rowan Municipal Association.
Her work with youth and education remains central to her community involvement. Mack has supported school programs, collaborated with educators and local businesses on after-school initiatives, and advocated for career and technical education opportunities that prepare students for future success.
Motivated by a desire to help Granite Quarry continue to thrive for families like hers and the generations to follow, Mack ran for Town Council to bring an educator’s perspective to local government. She is committed to thoughtful decision making and preserving Granite Quarry’s small-town character and values. Her priorities include infrastructure improvements that honor the town’s history, support for local schools, transparent governance, responsible budgeting, and strengthening services for both seniors and youth.
Mack values time with family and friends, volunteering, attending school and community events, and exploring ways to support thoughtful community development. She values the everyday connections that make Granite Quarry a special place to live.
She believes serving the residents of Granite Quarry is both a responsibility and a privilege and is committed to helping guide the town forward in a way that honors its past while creating opportunities for future generations.
